Martin Luther King, a popular name not only in America but all over the world. He had fought against injustice, discrimination, inequality, violence, and last but not least, civil rights in the USA. Presently 13.4% of the United States national population is facing poverty. It is a big challenge for the US to eradicate poverty.
If Martin Luther King would have been alive, what would he do to eradicate poverty? King explained how Americans should receive a set income from the government each year, allowing them to have a sustainable amount of money. This money would allow those in poverty to invest back in their communities, purchase goods, find reasonable housing, and have the means to live a better life.
As being a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King had a strong belief that everyone should get equal opportunities, facilities and respect. In his famous speech “The American Dream”, Martin Luther King said that “As long as there is poverty in this world, no man can be totally rich even if he has a billion dollars.” This shows he had a strong belief to eradicate poverty from America. The main reasons for poverty are less income and even limited access to facilities for economically backward people.
If King would have been alive, he will definitely try to improve the management of water and other natural resources. Most of the rural poor depends on agriculture or other natural resources for their livelihood. Consequently, it is necessary that they have more equitable access to those resources so they are better able to manage their resources.
He will try to remove barriers between poor and rich by providing equal access to resources and services. He would also try that all people have access to basic social services including education, health care, adequate food, sanitation, shelter, and clean water.
He would have empowered people living in poverty by involving them in the development and implementation of plans and programs. Their involvement ensures that programs reflect those things that are important to them.
Trade is the key to growth and prosperity for any country. Encouraging people to engage in trade as a path out of poverty. Some of the world’s poorest countries including Indonesia, Botswana, and Brazil have traded their way out of poverty. Moreover, he would create an environment in which there is access to jobs for everyone and also encourage entrepreneurial talent.
Although King is not alive today, his strong belief in eradicating poverty is eminent from his speeches, still encourage millions of people to fight against poverty and fulfil his dream.
