It is a novel about the youngest of three brothers. His father isn’t really around and seems least interested in the family. Agnes- Shuggie's mother isn’t happy with her life and resorts to drinking as she isn’t living the glamorous life she wished for.
Meanwhile, Shuggie gets bullied at school and in the neighbourhood for the way he is and feels like a complete misfit. The book talks about how a young boy tries to hold his family together and how he deals with situations that are too complex and damaging for a child his age.
